Southern and blues rock sensations Gov’t Mule are bringing their signature sounds to NYCB Theater!
Gov't Mule (also referred to as Government Mule) is a Southern rock jam band that was formed in 1994 as a side project of guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody (of The Allman Brothers Band fame). Five years after the pair joined The Allman Brothers Band, they recruited drummer Matt Abts in the project (often called by fans as ‘Mule’). Their love for 1960s acts like Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the James Gang, and Mountain brought them together and they were also influenced by Neil Young, Free, Traffic, Little Feat, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Black Sabbath. They released their eponymous debut album in 1995 and followed it up with another studio album and 2 live albums but it wasn’t until their 2000 release (Life Before Insanity) that they saw mainstream commercial success. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Allen was found dead in a New York City hotel room 6 months later. The band held a benefit concert called One for Woody and went on to have a stellar career with 15 more studio albums. They’ve also become a become a staple act at music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Mountain Jam, Vegoose, All Good, and the New Orleans Jazzfest.
