Dion DiMucci, New York's sensational rock, soul, and R&B artist is bringing his signature sounds to NYCB Theater!
Dion Francis DiMucci was born in The Bronx in 1939 and is a singer-songwriter who as a child took a liking to show business by accompanying his father (a vaudeville entertainer) on tour. He developed a love for country, blues and doo-wop musicians he heard performing in local bars and on the radio. He started to hone his singing skills on the street corners and local clubs of the Bronx, where he and other local singers created a cappella riffs. He created his unique musical blend of doo-wop, rock and R&B styles and went on to become one of the most popular American rock and roll performers of the pre-British Invasion era. With more than a dozen hits, he was a prominent figure on the Top 40 charts in the late 1950s and early 60s. He’s best known for his 1961 chart topping hits Runaround Sue and The Wanderer (the latter co-written with his fellow singer-songwriter Ernie Maresca). He’s had a stellar career with 30 studio albums, 6 compilation albums, and in 1984 he won the GMA Dove Award for the album I Put Away My Idols and was also nominated for Grammy Award for the same album.
